INEC has powers to cancel poll –Rep

member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abayomi Ayeola, representing Ibeju/Lekki Federal Constituency has debunked insinuations that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lacks the power to cancel the Anambra State governorship election.
The chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega had recently claimed that the electoral body lacks the power to cancel the controversial election as demanded by stakeholders.
But speaking with Daily Sun, Ayeola stressed that Jega’s statement was not true going by recent developments.
According to him, Nigerians would recall that the same INEC had in 2011 cancelled the National Assembly election mid way into the polls, owing to poor logistics arrangements.
The lawmaker said the whole thing was even when candidates in the botched polls were already aware of the result of the election.
Continuing, he said that that singular act and Jega’s latest stance shows that the INEC boss was only playing politics with the matter.
He stressed that it was rather unfortunate that over 50 per cent of Anambra voters were disenfranchised as they could not find their names on the voters register.
He said this was rather worrisome as INEC had through that singular act deprived thousands of Nigerians the right to exercise their fundamental human rights.
As a result, Ayeola stated that the outcome of such polls cannot stand given the fact that it lacks the credibility to call it a free  and fair election.
Calling for Jega’s resignation, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain said nothing good can come out of the planned supplementary election in the state.
He hinged this on the fact that the process kicked off on a faulty foundation and the outcome of such an exercise can never stand.
The lawmaker who expressed fears over the 2015 polls said the Anambra experience was a signal that all may not be well with the electoral system after all.
He therefore called for the  ouster of Prof. Attahiru Jega and  a serious overhauling of INEC through a system that would ensure that INEC was truly  free from external control.
