Ekwunife withdraws suit against INEC, APGA, Obiano

•Drops claims to governorship ticket

BY VIVIAN ONYEBUKWABarely 24 hours after her suit demanding that she be proclaimed the rightful candidate of  the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the Anambra governorship election got a hearing date, member of the House of Representatives, Uche Ekwunife, has withdrawn the case.

Ekwunife had filed a suit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), APGA and Chief Willie Obiano, governorship candidate of the party, asking the court to declared her the authentic candidate, following allegation that Obiano was involved in multiple registrations.
She had stated that since she came second in the primary election of APGA for the selection of the governorship candidate, she should be declared the candidate and Obiano disqualified. The suit had been slated for hearing on December 5,
However, Ekwunife yesterday stated in a statement that she was withdrawing the suit following appeals from Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, members of her family and others.
The federal lawmaker revealed that she had instructed her lawyers to withdraw the case and thereby, dissociated herself from any other suit or group pursuing such cause.
Ekwunife pledged her loyalty to APGA and expressed her support for Obiano.
The statement read in part: “In deference to pressure from my family members, my state governor, friends, colleagues, clergymen, royal fathers, well wishers and in the larger interest of our great party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), l have instructed my lawyers to terminate forthwith Suit No. FHC/AWK/CS/281/2013, which we instituted at the Federal High Court in Awka.
“I also disassociate myself from all other suits in any form or colour against our party’s candidate, Chief Willie Obiano, by any person or persons, group or groups before, now or in future.
“May I use this opportunity to affirm my loyalty to our governor, the national chairman of our great party and our candidate, Chief Obiano and APGA family. I sincerely believe that it is God that anoints kings, and that it is important that we put this entire episode behind us while praying for the shower of God’s blessings upon us and our dear state.”
Tomorrow, Anambra voters will go for a supplementary election in 210 units for the conclusion of the governorship election. The November 16 election was declared inconclusive by INEC.
In the results so far released, Obiano came first, with Tony Nwoye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) coming second. Dr. Chris Ngige of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came third, while candidate of Labour Party (LP), Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah came fourth. Mr. Godwin Ezeemo of the Progressives Peoples Alliance (PPA) came fifth.
