Ebola Kills Another Infected Nurse In Nigeria

Another Nigerian nurse that had contact with Patrick Sawyer, 40, the infected Liberian-American that brought the Ebola disease to Nigeria, has died in a Lagos hospital where she was receiving treatment in an isolated ward.

The female nurse has been identified as Justina Echelonu, a native of Abia State, South Eastern Nigeria.

Justina worked at First Consultant Hospital in Lagos, where Patrick was first treated without the hospital’s knowledge that he was infected with the virus. The Liberian-American, who was aware he was carrying the disease deliberately withheld the information from authorities and health personnel even though he arrived showing severe symptoms of the disease. He died on July 25th, three days after arriving Lagos onboard an ASKY airline from Monrovia via Lome, Togo.

Justina’s death brings to four (4) the official number of deaths from Ebola in Lagos, Nigeria’s financial and commercial hub, since the outbreak of the disease in West Africa.

The WHO says over 1000 persons have been killed since the latest Ebola outbreak with Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone accounting for almost all the cases. There are over 2000 cases as well.

Nigeria presently has about 11 confirmed cases while almost 200 persons are being closely monitored.
